What Do Mayflowers Bring?

December 7, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 3 Comments

Lately I’ve been reading the book Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick. I always enjoy learning the stories behind history, but this particular part of history has a special place in my heart because I am the 15th generation descendant of 4 people who came over to the New World on that ship.(Important Side Note: Which does not at all cause my husband to crack frequent jokes about “inbreeding” at my expense.)

This material is dovetailing nicely with all the things I was thinking about after reading Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, back before my intestines became the unfortunately fertile breeding ground for Hostile Alien Bacteria. Specifically it’s helping me to answer the question, “What’s my word?” Because not only have I realized that, of course, my word cannot be anything other than FREE, all this reading about my ancestors has given me a good idea of where that might have come from.

Of course we all know the traditional story of the Pilgrims and their desire for freedom from the king of England and his church, but it’s the way that Philbrick describes these desires that sometimes has all my hair standing on end in amazed recognition.

When I read things like, “…the Puritans had chosen to spurn thousands of years of accumulated tradition in favor of a text that gave them a direct and personal connection to God,” I remember how powerful an experience it was for me to go through the workbook of A Course In Miracles for the first time (Philbrick, p.8).

Or when I read that they wanted to be “…free to establish themselves on their own terms”, I think about how I have done the very same thing in creating my own work, my own contribution to the world, and my own role within my marriage (Philbrick, p.16).

And when I read that during their services, “…the entire congregation had participated in a passionate search for divine truth”, I almost shot out the top of my head, because that is what my entire life has been devoted to (Philbrick, p. 12).

I’m It

December 4, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 1 Comment

My friend, Elliott, has tagged me for a meme that requires me to produce 8 random facts about myself. So, here goes.

1. If I won the lottery, the very first thing I would do would be to install a soda fountain in my office so that I could enjoy the ambrosia of a fountain Coke whenever I wanted.

2. My husband and I refer to our cats in the third person, as in, “The Pip really enjoys expressing her love for us via the judicious application of her ass to our faces.”

3. Growing up I was of course not allowed to swear, but I was also not even allowed to say “shut up”. So during the spring of my freshman year of college I began my extremely late adolescent rebellion by calling up my husband (then boyfriend) for the express purpose of yelling out my very first swear word. (Do I know how to be a rebel or WHAT?!)

4. Thanks to nine years at Evangel Christian School I can sing all the books of the New Testament in order.

5. I passionately hate the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Just ‘cuz.

6. My favorite word is “creamy”.

7. When I was a senior in high school I was offered a partial music scholarship to Southern Methodist University for my piano playing ability, but I turned it down.

8. I must, at every second of the day including the times when I am asleep, be located near a bottle of hand lotion.

Why It’s A Really Good Thing I Have A Coach

December 3, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 1 Comment

Lately I’ve been in another one of my having-trouble-sleeping phases. My coach and I have been working on this together, and one of the things she suggested was that I pull out my relaxation/meditation CD’s and listen to them before I go to bed.

So yesterday when I checked in with her she asked if I’d been doing that.

Me: Um no, I haven’t.

My Coach: Hm.

Me: I even got it out and put it in my nightstand drawer, but that’s it.

My Coach: OK well tonight, I want you to ACTUALLY LISTEN TO IT.

That’s why I pay her the big bucks.

Footloose And Fancy Free

November 30, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 5 Comments

Recently I was talking to my mom about my cousin, who just had her first child. Everyone is fine now, but apparently she experienced some pretty severe complications during and after the birth.

Despite all the problems, “apparently she’s going to do it again one day,” said my mom.

Me (shuddering): No thank you!

My Mom: Well, you can just adopt all your children.

Me: I’m not having children.

My Mom: Well, you can just adopt them like at age 3, after all the messy stuff’s out of the way.

Me: It’s not just the birth-it’s the having them around all the time that I don’t want. I like being free. I like that I can pick up and go at anytime. I’m like a gypsy.

Explosive, hysterical laughter from the other end of the phone.

My Mom (heavily sarcastic): A gypsy with a Blackberry.

Me: I didn’t say I wasn’t well-connected. I just said that I was free.

Helping To Keep Me Young

November 28, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 3 Comments

I really enjoy working with high school students, because they help keep me current on many things such as language.

I was recently tutoring one student, and in between Spanish exercises she was telling me stories about her various friends and how they’d “hooked up” with members of the opposite sex.

I had a vague idea of what that term meant when I was a teenager, but I wasn’t sure exactly what it covered these days, so I asked my student to clarify it for me.

She said, “Well it doesn’t mean having sex, but it means you do everything up to right before getting ready to have sex. At least that’s what is means if you’re a teenager. I don’t know what it means to old people.”

Why My Parents Can Never Claim To Be Surprised At The Way My Brother And I Have Turned Out

November 27, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 2 Comments

top gear

This weekend my parents were down here for a visit, and I decided to introduce them to the magical world of the car show “Top Gear”, which airs on the BBC America network.

On this particular episode the three hosts were each required to acquire a car, saw it in half, and then transform it into their own, unique version of a limousine.

As we watched the men gleefully cut into their cars with varying degrees of success and the occasional electrical fire my dad said, “You know, my cousin and I did that once when we were growing up.”

My mom: “You sawed a car in half?”

My dad: “Yes. We did it to my grandfather’s old car after he died.”

My mom: “And how did you get permission to do something like that?”

My dad: “Well, he and I never really went the route of asking for permission.”

Me: “As in, it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission?”

My dad: “Exactly. My grandmother was not pleased.”

Time For Some Good Mojo

November 26, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 2 Comments

The last few weeks have been kind of rough around here, so I wanted to start off this week with a list of some of the good things that have been showing up for me.

1. Rain. Maybe now we here in Georgia can start playing nicely again with Florida and Alabama.

2. snob

I pink puffy heart anything that adds to my mad grammar skillz as a word nerd.

3. beauty

l never really learned any of the important “girly-girl” skills like makeup or hairstyling. Probably because of all the time I spent focusing on my grammar skills. Because we all know that Word Nerds are HOT! and are totally the stuff of high school boys’ dreams.

4. makeup

This stuff is amazing!

5. bloggod

Thanks to Lianne’s nomination, I won a blog award for my post, “Those Two Little Words”. You can check out the rest of the winners here.

6. The BBC show “Top Gear”. I never in life thought I would voluntarily watch a show about cars, but this show is HYSTERICAL. For example, in the show I watched yesterday the 3 hosts:

-gave a bad review to a car based on the fact that “It looks like a scrotum.”

-decided to build a convertible mini-van, to further illustrate that episode’s theme of “convertibles”. They picked the best mini-van they could find, but their feeling was that that didn’t really say much for the vehicle. In their opinion, saying that you drove the “best” mini-van was akin to saying, “Oh, yay! I’ve got syphilis-the best of the sexually transmitted diseases!”

7. My parents came to see me this weekend on a “get well and feel better soon” mission. They brought me the following cartoons:

I Don’t Think That’s Too Much To Ask From A Car

November 23, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 3 Comments

“All I want is a comfy environment, and for my balls not to hurt.”

-Hugh Grant, when asked what he looked for in a car on the show “Top Gear”

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 22, 2007 By Jenny Ryan 4 Comments

First of all, I have to say that my support system of amazing friends and family TOTALLY ROCKS!

On Tuesday when I found out I have temporary arthritis as a result of that stomach infection, I had a major meltdown. I just reached the absolute end of my ability to deal with life.

And then, when I could not do one more thing on my own, that is when everyone else swung into action for me.

When I could not move any more, they came to carry me.

I am not invincible. I can not do it all myself. I had to ask for help.

And surprisingly, the world did not end. I’m still okay.

Thank you.
