You Know You’re In Your Thirties When…

Author: Administrator
Category: I Love the 80's

…you can no longer understand the messages conveyed by the music videos that fueled your teenage years.

I’m sure that when we watched the video for “Shout” by Tears For Fears back in the 80’s, we understood, on a deep cellular and metaphysical level, the reason for the angst that was consuming the band during the performance of this song.

But now it just leads to conversations like this:

My husband: I’ve never seen quite that level of teeth before when someone is singing.

Me: I know. It’s kind of scary.

TFF: “Shout, shout, let it all out, these are the things I can do without.”

My husband: What things? What things?! We’d shout with you if we knew what the hell you were talking about!

Oh thats almost as bad as “why do they have to scream? Do they WANT people not to know what the hell they are talking about” (not about the shout video, it was some angry 80s rock) which sadly was me

We got MTV from day 1 (the next door neighbor was the local cable guy). I enjoyed watching the videos of concert footage of the doors, led zeppelin, um, madonna (to be honest), etc. I think the message was subliminal, though, as you mentioned, today I don’t know what it was. But I do remember feeling strangely uncomfortable when videos by The Thompson Twins came on.

We want to be God in all the ways that are not the ways of God, in what we hope is indestructible or unmoving. But God is fragile, a bare smear of pollen, that scatter of yellow dust from the tree that tumbled over in a storm of grief and planted itself again.
